He was not yet a dharma wanderer when it happened, when that vertical beam of brilliant white light streamed down from the overcast sky onto the ferry dock at the Norwegian shore. The unexpected shock cast a beckoning spell from the mystery that would unfold, moment by moment, year by year, decade by decade.
Beholding that light left a mark on him, a before/after mark that penetrated his consciousness, winding deep into the DNA of his being. He was awakened by that light, ignorant of awakening’s meaning, its implications, its demands, its challenges, and yes, even its opportunities.
That touching of his being with the light was almost a half century ago. Since then he had explored a wide variety of visualization practices.
Bringing light into his body on the inhale.
Using it for healing intention from his heart with hope and a wish on the exhale.
Sending it out the top of his head or from his heart in moments of climactic ecstasy.
When the warmth of loving kindness spontaneously coursed through his being, radiating it from his torso to surround his loved ones.
Sending it from his heart into his breakfast bowl after morning chants, then surrounding his fragile planetary home with it.
We live within a vibratory universe, as well as a potential infinite variety of multiverses. Light is composed of vibrating particles. Concentrated intention can penetrate the quantum soup of reality that surrounds us. That quantum vibration can ripple through multiple dimensions of space/time. What goes out from thoughts, feelings and behavior can bounce back in karmic surprise.
What we think, do and feel has vibratory [karmic] effects within the current babble of chaotic turbulence. How to cope within such turmoil?
Be clear about purpose for the benefit of self, loved ones and all sentient beings. Align thoughts and behavior with that purpose. Develop concentrated focus in the present moment.
Then, guidance will arise. This is so.
Be alert for noticing/sensing/feeling it
Trial and error develops trust in that guidance.
Discernment of beneficent guidance is a skill.
Reflect on this.
Explore it.
Discover multiple levels of unfolding reality, moment by moment, as wisdom ripens within an increasingly fertile soil of consciousness.

Peter Russell, Savant Master of the Light of Consciousness, "The Light of Consciousness, The one I am, at the heart of all creation, Thou art the light of life."--Shvetashvatara Upanishad
My studies in experimental psychology had taught me much about neurophysiology, memory, behavior, and perception. Yet, despite all that I was learning about brain function, I was no closer to understanding the nature of consciousness itself. The East, however, appeared to have a lot to say about the subject, and so did many mystics, from around the world. For thousands of years such seekers had focused on the inner realm of the mind, exploring its subtler aspects through direct personal experience.
Believing that such approaches might offer insights unavailable to Western science, I began delving into ancient texts such as The Upanishads, The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation, The Cloud of Unknowing, and contemporary writers such as Alan Watts, Aldous Huxley, Carl Jung, and Christopher Isherwood.
I was fascinated to find that here, as in modern physics, light was a recurrent theme. Consciousness itself was often spoken of in terms of light. The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation spoke of "the self-originated Clear Light, eternally unborn… shining forth within one’s own mind." St. John referred to "the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."
Those who have awakened to the truth about reality–whom we often call illumined, or enlightened–frequently describe their experiences in terms of light. The sufi Abu 'l-Hosian al-Nuri experienced a light "gleaming in the Unseen… I gazed at it continually, until the time came when I had wholly become that light."
